A Funny Thing Happened… Coaching with Vicki Hawes
Apr 23, 2025
I was in the middle of delivering a coaching session when my client suddenly referred to me as his ‘Work EAP.’ At first, I was a bit puzzled. I’ve always associated EAP (Employee Assistance Program) with workplace counseling services—an invaluable resource, no doubt! But as we continued talking, I realized he had a different interpretation. He meant that I was his go-to person for work-related leadership challenges—someone who could provide guidance, clarity, and strategies to navigate professional hurdles.
I had to laugh at the comparison, but he wasn’t wrong! While an EAP typically provides emotional support and crisis intervention, coaching takes a proactive and goal-oriented approach to personal and professional development. And as much as I appreciated the compliment, I made sure to clarify the distinction between coaching and counseling!
What is Coaching, Really?
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as:
“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity, and leadership.”
Coaching is about transformation—it’s about unlocking your hidden potential and pushing past self-imposed limits. But here’s the thing: Not all coaches are created equal. If you’re considering hiring a coach, there are a few crucial things to keep in mind.
Choosing the Right Coach: What to Look For
Are They Qualified?
Many people offer coaching based on personal experience or books they’ve read. While experience is valuable, true coaching requires training and certification. Look for a coach who has completed a recognized qualification to back up their expertise and also if they are a member of the International Coaching Federation, Career Development Association of Australia or a reputable, recognised coaching association.
Do They Have Relevant Experience
Coaching is not a one-size-fits-all profession. If you’re looking for leadership coaching, life coaching, or career coaching, it’s essential to find a coach with the right expertise. Leadership coaching helps professionals develop decision-making skills and workplace strategies. Life coaching focuses on personal growth, mindset shifts, and achieving work-life balance. Career coaching provides clarity on career transitions, goal-setting, and professional development. Do your research and find a coach whose background aligns with your needs.
Do You Connect With Them?
Coaching is a partnership, and chemistry matters! Most reputable coaches (including me!) offer a free 15-minute discovery session. This gives you a chance to see if the coach’s style resonates with you. You want someone who challenges you in the right way and helps you uncover blind spots while providing the support you need.
Check Testimonials and Client Feedback
A coach’s impact is best measured by their clients' success. Check their website for testimonials, reviews, or case studies. Who have they worked with? What results have their clients achieved? A proven track record speaks volumes.
Why Coaching is a Worthwhile Investment
Investing in coaching is investing in yourself. It’s a small price to pay for achieving your goals faster, gaining clarity, and growing both personally and professionally. A great coach doesn’t just offer advice—they provide a structured process to help you break through barriers and achieve sustainable success.
So, if you’re ready to take your leadership, career, or personal development to the next level, let’s talk! I might not be your ‘Work EAP,’ but I can certainly help you unlock your full potential and achieve your biggest goals.
