When do you need a Coach?

Feb 19, 2021

For as long as I can remember, people have sought me out for help with their career progression, goals, aspirations and workplace relationships.    I remember back in 2009 when I was working fly in/fly out and sitting at an empty cable drum being used as a table working on site in the Pilbara in Corporate Affairs.  A bus driver came along and sat down next to me.  He started to talk to me about a career change, where he wanted his life to go, his personal and professional aspirations and asked for advice.  I remember saying to him ‘How come you are asking me?’ He looked at me and said ‘Because you know how to help me with this’.  He was not the only one – I had many people asking me for advice over the years.  This was a sliding door moment for me – the catalyst for my future career was as a coach.  But what does a coach do?

A professional coach is a trained and accredited professional who acts as a ‘sounding board’ for clients to listen and understand their needs.  A coach offers guidance and support to their clients exploring with them opportunities to achieve their work and life goals.  They can help individuals and teams have a mindset change and go from zero to hero!   A coach works with clients who may lack direction, unable to set goals, be unmotivated and feel they are not able to achieve anything. It could be worry about a work situation or something else happening in life. You might simply need help working out how to achieve a work/life balance! You may be feeling stressed culminating from workplace conflict, having difficult conversations, bad leadership, too much work and not enough hours to do it.  Fly in/fly out roles may be making people feel disconnected from others and unappreciated – how many times have you heard a partner/friend/neighbour/family member say ‘you only work half the year and get paid all that money’ without knowing how difficult this style of work can be! Maybe you are feeling burnt out from work. Or maybe you simply need help with a career change or career progression.

For all these reasons, it can be beneficial working with a coach who can help you focus, put things into perspective and map out a pathway to a happier future.

Everything you have read above I have lived and more – so you will be working with someone who is a university accredited coach but who also has the life experience backing me.
